AAABA Tournament bracket starting to take shape

August 3, 2016

Six teams have advanced through pool play to the single-elimination quarterfinal round of the 72nd annual AAABA Tournament.

The final two spots will be determined after Wednesday night’s game between Johnstown’s Martella’s Pharmacy and the Cleveland Blaze at Point Stadium.

Match-ups already determined for Thursday’s games include: New Orleans vs. Zanesville; and Chicago Metro vs. New Brunswick.

Columbus and Johnstown Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors each have secured spots in the next round, but their opponents won’t be known until after Wednesday’s night game at the Point.

In Pool A, New Orleans, Chicago Metro and Buffalo each tied at 2-1. New Orleans earned the top seed based on the tiebreaker fewest runs allowed in the pool through three games (seven). That left Chicago and Buffalo vying for the final berth in the pool. Chicago won the head-to-head tiebreaker based on its 10-3 win over Buffalo on Monday.

In Pool B, Columbus, Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors and Philadelphia each went 2-1. Columbus allowed the fewest runs in the pool (five) and earned the top seed. Paul Carpenter beat Philadelphia 5-2 on Tuesday to win the head-to-head tiebreaker.

In Pool C, Brooklyn went 2-1 and Baltimore finished 0-3. Martella’s Pharmacy began the day 2-0 and will play 1-1 Cleveland in the night game. A Martella’s victory would lock up the top seed and give Brooklyn the second seed. A Cleveland win would put three teams at 2-1 and put the tiebreakers into use.

In Pool D, New Brunswick went 3-0 to take the top spot. Zanesville, Livonia and New York each were 1-2.  Zanesville took the second spot based on the tiebreaker of fewest runs allowed among the three teams (11).
