Johnstown’s Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors overcame a five-run deficit behind a 14-hit attack on offense and an 11-strikeout effort on the mound by righty Jake Jessell to earn a spot in the semifinal round of the 72nd annual AAABA Tournament.
Johnstown defeated the Brooklyn Bonnie Rams 16-10 in the Thursday night game at Point Stadium.
Brooklyn took a 5-0 lead through the top of the third. All the runs were unearned after four Paul Carpenter errors and two dropped third strikes on potential inning-ending pitches.
Paul Carpenter rallied with a three-run third and a five-run fourth. The Johnstown-2 representative had at least one run in its final six at-bats.
Jessell struck out 11 Brooklyn hitters. At one stretch, he retired nine in a row and didn’t allow a hit from the fourth through seventh innings.
Evan Price went 4-for-6 with three runs and four RBIs for Johnstown. Noah Beasly went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and four RBIs.
Brooklyn’s Isaiah Russell had two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Luiny Monegro had two hits, one run and one run batted in. Lorenzo Vasquez had a two-run double.
Johnstown-2 is 3-1 in the tournament. Brooklyn finished 2-2.
Friday’s semifinal schedule will include two games:
- Chicago Metro vs. Zanesville, Point Stadium, 11 a.m.
- Cleveland vs. Johnstown-2, Point Stadium, 6 p.m.
