Rain interrupts AAABA night game; Martella’s advances after Brooklyn concedes

Johnstown’s Martella’s Pharmacy and Brooklyn SAYO Grays each grabbed momentum throughout a third-round game in Pool D at Sargent’s Stadium at the Point.

Martella’s built a 6-0 lead before Brooklyn rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth.

Then, lightning filled the skies above the Point and rain fell for more than an hour.

Eventually Brooklyn made the decision to concede the 6-5 game to Martella’s because the Grays would be eliminated in pool play, win or lose on Wednesday, and Johnstown already had locked up the first spot.

The Grays informed the AAABA national committee that the team planned to get on the road for a 6 1/2 hour drive home Thursday morning rather than complete the suspended game at 10 a.m. at the Point.

The rains did affect the schedule as a doubleheader originally set at Roxbury Park now will be played on the artificial turf at Mount Aloysius College.

Thursday’s schedule will match:

  • Pool A-2 Buffalo Royal Printing vs. Pool B-1 New York Long Island Astros, Mount Aloysius College, 11 a.m.
  • Pool A-1 New Orleans Boosters vs. Pool B-2 New Brunswick Matrix, Sargent’s Stadium, noon.
  • Pool C-1 Philadelphia Bandits vs. Pool D-2 Maryland State Crabfest, Mount Aloysius College, 2 p.m.
  • Pool D-1 Johnstown Martella’s Pharmacy vs. Pool C-2 Zanesville Junior Pioneers, Sargent’s Stadium, 7 p.m.
