The ‘Voice of the AAABA Tournament’ returns

August 5, 2018

Brian Woy celebrated 40 years of work in the Point Stadium press box last August.

The veteran public address announcer will be back for his 41st AAABA Tournament on opening night of the 74th annual event at the newly renamed Sargent’s Stadium at the Point.

The Johnstown native has been in the various press boxes at the old and new Point for more than four decades. Even when he worked and resided out-of-state, Woy made the trip home to work the microphone.

Woy once recalled how he got the Point Stadium gig through an instance of good timing.

“Denny Grenell came to my forensics class at Johnstown High and heard me do a commercial for Johnstown High,” Woy told The Tribune-Democrat in 2014, referring to the former Johnstown Oldtimers treasurer and AAABA Hall of Famer who was among the best promoters of this region, especially the AAABA Tournament. “Denny said, ‘Can you do baseball?’ I gave him my telephone number. I’ve been here ever since.”

Woy played baseball in the Johnstown Junior League and AAABA during the late 1970s.
