Lilly lost a legend with death of Steve Suchta; longtime Voice of AAABA Tournament games

January 21, 2019

Steve Suchta, the voice of Lilly’s Washington War Memorial Field, died on Jan. 18 after a long illness.

Suchta served more than 50 years as a volunteer public address announcer at the field and had been a part of the AAABA Tournament since the annual event first began playing at outlying fields such as Lilly in the late 1980s.

In 2016, the press box at the Lilly field was renamed the “Steve Suchta Broadcasting Booth” in his honor.

He was known for his knowledge of the game and dedication to his community as well as for the many jokes he told over the PA system during breaks in the action.
