The 77th AAABA Tournament officially opened in grand fashion as 6,107 fans packed Sargent’s Stadium at the Point and shrugged off scattered rain showers to watch Johnstown Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors defeat New York Rockland Pirates 8-3.
In total, eight games played on seven fields throughout the Johnstown region on Monday, August 1.
In the day games:
* Joe Carrea pitched nine innings of one-hit ball, striking out 11 and walking none in New Brunswick Matrix’s 3-0 victory over Johnstown-2 Martella’s Pharmacy at Sargent’s Stadium. Carrea had a perfect game through 6 2/3 innings and only faced one batter over the minimum in a game that lasted 1 hour, 40 minutes.
* Cade Pregeant had three hits, including a double, four RBIs and two runs scored, and Bryan Broussard had three hits, with a double, four RBIs and four runs scored as the defending champion New Orleans Boosters pulled away from the North Carolina Disco Turkey’s 18-3 in seven innings at Roxbury Park.
* Corey Chamberlain hit two homers, Colton Burd went deep, Devon Boyles tripled and Aidan Steinbugl hit two doubles in Altoona Cumming Motors’ 10-0 win over Youngstown Creekside Crocodiles in eight innings at Mount Aloysius College.
* Ronald Fils-Aime struck out 13 batters in six innings and Dany Pena doubled as the Brooklyn Cougars beat the Zanesville Junior Pioneers 8-1 at Westmont Hilltop High School.
* Six players had two hits apiece, including Michael Feri’s two doubles and Joseph Trivisonno’s triple in Cleveland B2Bulls’ 8-5 win over Buffalo Royal Printing at Portage’s Haschak Memorial Field.
* Xavier Delgado had two homers among his three hits. Anthony Bruno had three hits, including a homer. Robert Buckley had three hits for Philadelphia. Columbus’ Noah Sprowls had three hits, Braden Reed hit a homer, and Eric Colaco tripled for the TNT Knights at St. Michael.
* Anderson Moreno had three hits, with a double and two RBIs, Bryan Abraham doubled, and Genesis Nunez tripled in the Brooklyn-2 10-7 win at Lilly. Maryland State’s Likeiry Jimez had three hits, and Hector Vargas doubled.
In the night game:
* Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors rode the strong combined mound outing of Roman Gill, Rodney Shultz and Jacob Bazala to an 8-3 victory over New York in front of a packed house at the Point. Aidan Dunlap reached base five times, with three hits, three runs and a triple.
